UM POUCO DE MAGIA...

"QUEM CRIOU O PAPAI NOEL?"

A figura do velho bonachão São Nicolau, bispo de Myra, na Rússia, converteu-se com o passar do tempo na conhecida figura do Papai Natal. Se bem que os elementos fundamentais estivessem há muito definidos (barba, roupas, etc.) somente com uma campanha publicitária da Coca-Cola a imagem se fixou na que conhecemos hoje. Seu autor foi Haddon Sundblom.



Vejamos um pouco desta história:
"Corria o ano de 1931 quando o ilustrador americano foi convidado pela Coca-Cola para desenhar a imagem para a sua campanha de Natal desse ano. Note-se que, desde 1920 até então, era hábito da empresa usar a imagem de Santa Claus para promover a sua bebida. Um dos ilustradores que precederam Sundbom foi nada mais nada menos do que Norman Rockwell que, pese embora os seus magníficos desenhos, não conseguiu obter grande sucesso publicitário.

Sundblom institucionalizou a figura do Pai Natal recusando a semelhança com um elfo de anteriores versões e dando-lhe um aspecto inequivocamente humano na fisionomia e, sobretudo, nos traços do rosto. Diz-se que recorreu a um modelo humano - um amigo seu, Lou Prentice - e, posteriormente ele próprio serviu de modelo. Além disso, teve a teimosia ou a intuição de desenhar sempre a mesma figura em todas as campanhas até 1964. Esta persistência teve como resultado a consolidação da figura que conhecemos hoje: um velho barrigudo, de longa barba branca, rosto corado e sorriso jovial."
